Woke somewhat better, & drew till 12 after breakfast ― sent letter to J. Hutchinson. All those people came, but I was far too ill to “talk well” ― & could only get through my “lecture” with difficulty. Afterwards I drew again, but growing cold, at 4, walked out, & meeting S.C. & Bright, went round the Borghese: Neither were satisfactory. ― The former most sadly life-wearied & vacant: both gossipping & common: ― perhaps I am too “intolerant.” Gibbs seems to me the most anxiously progressive man I see here. ―
I returned home to dine comfortably at 6. ―
Wrote to Ann afterwards.
