X3 Yet, withal, ― I strove to rise, & did: ― & heard G.’s lessons ― & at 10 ― went to Church. Great crowd. P. of W. &c. &c. ―――――
Calling at Bright’s to Lunch ― (having given them a Calabria, to quiet my conscience for so often dining there ―) ― where was Gibbs, whom I cannot help liking, & don’t like him laughed at. ― The Bright party & I drove to the V. Φλαμινια ― & then walked to [Son ] Castle ― & on to Nero’s tomb ―: how beautiful is that Campagna!
Drove to P. Molle, & walked by the river to P. Popolo. We met Hibbert & Miss Trotman. ―
Home to dress ― & dined at the B.’s. Mrs. B. has much vulgarity & bad taste, yet is kindly ― & shrewd. ― I can’t tell how I came to be so much with their party ― yet so it is. ――
