Φρightful row ― & rushing of carriages all night ― no sleep. & irritation (X4 ―) I tore only therefrom at 8¼ ― O dear me! This sad no-progress life! ―
Heard Giorgio’s lessons, & accounts. ― & διδασκαλος ―― to the 16 line of Homer (!!!!!) ―
Worked, but sadly & idly, at Husey Hunt’s Jerusalem by fits all day ― looking out at the absurd carnival at times ― for it came up to Condotti. ― Letter from Mrs. Clive (strictures on Mrs. M. ― I should think she is an odd woman.) ―
At 4½ ― went out with Gio ― over the Pincian, ― for him to see the Races, which was ill done. Meanwhile I walked with Col. Caldwell ― who fears war: ― as do all men of sense. ―― Gio. returned, & I went back to dinner.
But at 9 he has gone out for tobacco ― & returns no more.
