Rose late ― 8. Breakfast, & wrote & “divided” & packed at intervals. I fancy I shall go away in 10 days or so. It seems a misery to look forward to London Life again. ― but what can I do else ― considering the chances ahead? ― At 2 Drummond came ― & later Philpot, with whom I walked to P. Salara, & over Antenne ― (where I cannot remember ever to have been,) & so to Acqu’acetosa, & back by the Tiber & over the Pincian.
The day was stormy early ― but the Campagna very green & lovely. Philpot is much less abroad & stilty when you see him home: ― “That man has put out one of the eyes of his reason, in order to save his soul” ― was said of Newman by a friend of his. Assuredly his brother Francis keeps both of his.
Dined alone. I hear the church was still full today.
