Rose at 5.30. ― Cold & gray. ― Just now the certainty that Mrs. Hornby is dead comes to me. O! life!

At home all the morning ― writing Athos journal & letters.
Scobell’s church here is a scandal for deadness & ugliness.
After lunch, walked out with B. ― & Captn Warren; but although the hills were lovely, the East wind was diabolical ― & made me ill.
Dinner al solito: but Humphrey Blackmore’s silence wearieth: howbeit I say nothing of it. ―
The worst is, this East wind worries my bronchial system so I can’t sing to them.
