Up by 5½ ― very bright & lively. ― Wrote Damascus journal &c. to 7 packed. ― Breakfast lively & pleasant, “urbane, polite, astute” &c. ―
Walked to Parsonage, & saw Francis Hepburn ― & to Church [Home], & Miss Blencowe. ― Quiet good Xtian folk all them. How pleasant these walks & woods! (32 children have died of difθήρια this winter.) Lunch. ― Left with Mr. B. at 2. ― Most excellent & kind people! ― Drive to Streat, & thence by Ditchling & Keymer to [Dasney]. ― Day lovely ― & these downs most interesting. [Dasney] is beautifully “homey.” ― J. Blencowe & Mrs. J. & the little boy ― a very nice baby, really. ― After Mr. B. went, J. & I walked up the Wolstonbury Hill ― a far & grand prospect ― but storms were out afar. ――
Returning ― there were Mr. & Mrs. Campion ―: ― Mrs. C. a remarkably nice woman, Mr. C. friendly, but naturally reserved. Dinner pleasant, ― ditto evening, & prayer & all things. A charming specimen of old plain Anglosaxon gentlemen & ladies. ―
