Cloudy, but very hot & close. Only rose at 7½ ― weary sadness. ―

Breakfast, then work at Athos pretty closely: eyes not well. ― Newspaper at 11. At 4 ― letters from W. Evans, Mrs. G. Clive, & Lady Wenlock. ― Wrote to Lady W. ― & Brie. ― Rain ― a little. ― Bathed at 4½ ― calm water, ― & were the beach sand, it would be great fun. ―

Dinner ― & ate & drank less. Worked at the small Corfu afterwards. Then walked to Hastings, buying a hat, & 2 crapes, & leaving a note for Mrs. Thimmond to pay for the new hat, when my old one was brought home. ― Went to G. Scrivens’s ― for I have settled that it is of no use to hide my being there ― so I agreed to dine there tomorrow. ― But there is little pleasure in that ― or rather, her, society. Came home, & near 119 ― met the Hatter, carrying off my £1 hat, because there ain’t 9/6 change. Blew him up & paid. ―

There is a sadness here: eh. ὧ ὧ ὧ ―
