Rose at 6. Bern going shooting. Breakfast alone ― at 7½. At 9½ left by rail. Brighton 10. Went to see Allan Nevill ― out. Then to the beach ― morning lovely & bright: vast crowds of children & walkers ― as pretty a sight as possible. Met Miss Whitehouse, & saw Allan: he does not seem improved to me: smaller, harder, ― colder. ― Then I walked about till nearly 12 ― when rail again to Worthing. Tired, & slept. ― Worthing ―: walked to Tarring, & took Mrs. Stanton’s lodgings. Then returned & got luggage ― & then unpacked. Looking at trees ― in the village, took up till 4 or 5 ― when I walked to Worthing for Turpentine, &c. &c. The beach is dull & sad there. I shut my eyes to life here ― but hope only. ― Dinner at 6½. Outline of Lord Clermont’s picture.
