Sate near the door ― W. preached, I regret to say, rather absurdly. ― Afterwards, at 1, I went to Bright’s ― (having walked over the Pincian with S.W.C. ―) & lunched there, with Sir John Duckworth, with whom, & B., I went in a carriage to P.S. Sebastiano, & so walking by Grotta Egeria,2 to the Appian way. Indeed, the Roman landscape was truly lovely ― the near distance Aquedux &c. ― all in shade.

From the Villa of Quintilian, we walked home by the Road in ¼ of an hour from a mile ― & so to our houses. Where I dressed, & went to S.W.C. ― 2 Tippings & Hibbert: the last a nice fellow: the 2 former absurd. ―
