Analipsis, 12 February 1858 (Lear 1988, 127).

Colder again. Rose at 8½. Shocking lateness.

Did not paint, but arranged drawing “material” for Palestine ― & other roba ― till 12 or so. Then, went to Taylor’s, & paid his bill, ― & to Page’s for Medicines, & to the Spectacle man, & Citadel ― &c. &c. &c. ― & so home by 1 or 2 ― & lunch. ― Packing & arranging again. Noise downstairs ― the ‘Muto.’1 At 3½ or 4 went up to Ascension ― always beautiful ― sketched twice & walked over the hill & down to the 1 Gun road & so home at 6¼. Colder.

F.L. came to dine at 7. Agreeable evening.

Mrs. Gage has a son. The Y.s are gone to Athens, & the only ball is on a [Sunday]! Much talk with L. ― but it is dry & chalky work. C. Calvert is married.
