Wonderful to say ― riz at 6!!!!! ―
Greek lesson ― from 7 to 8. ― Gave a dollar to Laskaratos’ friends of Syra ― Giorgates. ― Accounts ― (after lesson ―) with Giorgio ― paying him 10 dols. ― out of his month’s 14. ― No man can serve another, either in duty or kindness ― better than he has served me for 3 years, today. ― An hour or two went in arranging folios &c. ―: & to Macpherson’s 2 or 3 times before I found him at home. Questions about Photography of drawings. At 2 ― lunch: ― Hughes, Miss Ingram, & the little boy came. Very kind good people. Then the Macphersons, who staid till 4. ― At 5 ― I ordered carton papers, & walked in the Borghese ― solo, till 6. Cold. Dressed, & to the Marshalls. As usual ― very unsatisfactory: ― we wait ― all the dishes on table ―for Mrs. M. ― 20 minutes: sit down to cold food[.] 3 or 4 derangements of father & son ― but no Mrs. M. ―. Charmside & A. de Vere ― only. ― In the drawing room ― Mrs. M. ― whom I cannot help thinking a somewhat selfish fine lady: ― & later the Storeys ―who are gracious & fresh. ― But at 10½ I came away by stealth ― & tho’ there is (& may be more) much good in the J.M.’s ― yet I think I will hardly go there again.
