Greek lesson ― 7 to 8. ― Foggy morning ―but afterwards clear.
Drew ― off & on, at the Sandbach drawings. At 12 called on the Photograph man & P.W. ― Found, on returning, a letter from Spiro ― greatly to Giorgio’s pleasure. Afterwards, one Edgar Drummond came ― whom I found had been at Bassæ ― Bethlehem, Gerash, Philæ ― & everywhere. It was excessively funny to talk to him of the “Bank” & my absurd letters: ― & I hardly know when I have seen a nicer person. Moreover, I believe he is going to buy the little Philæ. ― At 4½ ― the day being [eat up], I went to Williams & walked with him: he is always cheerful now. ―
Rumours of war increase. ― At 7 to the Chetwodes, ― Mrs. Chambers & Miss Maitland, ― & a Sir Winston Barron then. No people in the world can be more amiable than the Chetowdes, & I am sorry they are going. ―
After dinner there were Codringtons, Trotmans & Hibberts, Gubbins’s ― (Mrs. G. very clean & pleasing ―) Macbeans, Macallerton ― (?)― & some others. ―
Singing & playing ― Mrs. Chambers very beautifully. Miss Trotman played ― ditto ― & the Cloches des Monasteres brought back that Corfu Room, & poor Helena! ―――
The K. of Naples is dying ― but not yet dead.
