Hotter, I think; yet a breeze. ― but depressed & heated all day. Inside not right. Slept pretty well. Rose at 7. ―
Whited Petra sky before breakfast. ― Letters from dear old Ann, & Mrs. Hunt: (they, the H.s ― are at Hythe ―: rifle club.) The newspaper ― at 11 is gloomy enough. Italian affairs dreadful: & more danger of war with France daily. Worked at the Petra all day, with fits of Sophocles, ― letter writing, & dinner at 5. One pint of beer ― & leg of mutton. ― [Wery] little pleasure in life. ― At 8 took letters to post, & walked by the sad [gr.]. ― Posted letters to
Ann
