At 8½ Rimbault came to breakfast. ― Letter from Mr. Bell.

Wrote to
F.L.
Macbean

After breakfast, we worked at “Too late” & the rest of the songs. At 11 the Lodgers from below came to look at pictures. (Batterscomb.)

At 12 walked with Rimbault ―: various anecdotes of the Maharajah ― & all tending very directly to show the finely generous nature of the man. Sir J. Login ― who only took him to hear Dr. Cumming ― & advised him to throw out “pence” ― to musicians ― &c. &c. &c. &c. No wonder poor Gallier growled!! ―

At 12 Rimbault went on to London. His musical talents, though peculiar, ― first rate in that peculiar road ― are to me less a portion of his companionship than his anecdotes [] & antiquarian lore, ― & his fun. ― Returned to work at Petra ― off & on ― till 11. ―

Letter from F.L. about the Bassæ chiefly.

Wrote to him ― & ablsolutely to Macbean ― ordering the Bassæ & Civitella ― (poor dear wanderers!) to be sent him at once. ―

Then walked to Hastings ― & back. ―

Day calm & fine all through.
