Fine, gray ― not very cold, but dry. ― Very pleasant morning with S.W.C. ― the plain square hearted & kind. At 12½ he went to ‘Beak’s’ place at Loughboro’ ― (a red coated individdle coming in who drank beer,) I at 11 ― in the Dog cart with a good & intelligent [dean], (coachman a groom to Sir R.S. for 17 years,) to Barrow by 12.45. Rail to Nottingham. Individual who spoke of the F. War, & [Notts mecanzia] ― & democratic revolutionists, & D. of Newcastle ― “we haven’t great opinion of him.” ― Country not “prepossessing ―” villages squalidy. ― At 2½ ― Linby ― & walk to Papplewick Hall.  a good square home like an elevated Ashland: with beautiful Park views. ―

H. Walter ― hospitable & kindly & fussy as ever. Mrs. W. ― almost helpless now, but sunny & amiable as ever. The little dog who used to walk on the table. ― Walk with W. about the place. A curious feeling ― looking at Newstead! ―

Well. ― After that I saw cows & pigs & dung & filth. A Mr. Fleet ― pleasant. & then at 4½ sate with Mrs. W., a true kind Englishwoman. Her account of the Musters made me glad the M. Parkyns are to be there. ― Lo! Hutchinson [―> Good kind Mrs. Miéville is dead ― & Leonora also] of Queen Sqr. days!! ― !! ― Gray ― & sadly old. ―

Dressing ― & dinner: ― good of course.

Later ― sang a little.

Came to room at 11.
