Archeologist; educated at Shrewsbury School and Christ Church, Oxford; M.A., 1840; assistant in department of antiquities at British Museum, 1840: vice-consul at Mytilene, 1862; consul at Rhodes, 1853-4 ; superintended excavations in Calymnos, 1854-5, and identified site and recovered chief remains of mausoleum at Halicarnassus: consul at Rome, 1860 ; keeper of Greek and Roman antiquities at British Museum, 1861-85.
